A Dual-Polarized Fixed-Frequency Beam-Scanning Leaky-Wave Antenna for Millimeter-Wave Applications

The rapid development of 5G millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) applications has put forward higher requirements for antennas, such as low cost. In this letter, a novel dual-polarized (DP) fixed-frequency beam-scanning leaky-wave antenna based on ridge gap waveguide (RGW) is proposed, operating in 5G mm-Wave band. The antenna is composed of a row of DP radiation elements fed by two rows of RGWs arranged side by side. The working state of each DP element is controlled by two independent slot-control structures. A 96-element antenna prototype is simulated, fabricated, and measured. DP radiation property (±45°) is achieved, with independent scanning for each polarization. A scanning angle larger than 95° and the peak realized gain of 14.3 dBi are achieved for each polarization. The port isolation for two polarizations is lower than −30 dB in most observation bands. The experimental results agree well with the simulated results. The antenna shows the advantage of low cost, which is of significance to the 5G mm-Wave applications.
