Visualization Bio- Impedance- Based Module for Automated Venepuncture Robotic Device

Venipuncture and peripheral intravenous catheterization are commonly required for various medical research studies and therapeutic procedures, and they are among the most common manipulations in medical practice. However, despite their prevalence, these procedures have low first-attempt success rates, due both to the skill and experience of the medical staff and to varying patient characteristics. To address these issues, this study proposes a new automated module for venous vessel imaging and venipuncture guidance based on electrical impedance measurements. The imaging component of this module includes an electrode array that allows precise identification of the position of a venous vessel to within half the electrode diameter, equivalent to 1.75 mm. The puncture control unit allows the system to detect a puncture with an accuracy of more than 90%. Moreover, compared to similar systems using ultrasound and optical imaging, the accuracy of the presented technology is potentially less dependent on patient movement, making it more suitable for pediatric procedures.
