An Adaptive Storage Switching Algorithm for Fault-Tolerant Network Attached Storage systems

Network Attached Storage (NAS) systems are fundamental to contemporary data management, providing centralized storage and swift access for data-intensive operations in organizations. However, susceptibility to NAS hardware faults or network disruptions may cause temporary data inaccessibility, impacting critical business functions. This paper presents an innovative algorithm designed to seamlessly transition data storage during NAS faults or network instability, ensuring continuous operations. The algorithm orchestrates a swift switch from the primary NAS to a local drive upon detecting network instabilities or NAS faults, proactively initiating an automated failover mechanism. This proactive approach mitigates NAS or network outages, preserving data integrity and operational continuity. During failover, the algorithm safeguards seamless data storage and retrieval from the local drive until network restoration. Upon network or NAS recovery, it seamlessly restores accumulated data to the primary NAS, ensuring uninterrupted data storage. Operating through predefined triggers and conditional checks, the algorithm dynamically adjusts data storage based on network availability and NAS system health. It facilitates synchronization between the NAS and the local drive, guaranteeing data integrity during transitions. Its autonomous nature reduces dependency on uninterrupted NAS functionality, providing a robust solution for data integrity and system reliability in volatile network environments.
