Head/disk interface failure mechanism

The problem of head crashes in magnetic disk recording is discussed. The events which precede typical failures of head/disk interfaces have been studied. These include perturbations in the slider dynamics, which was studied with a laser system; debris buildup on head and disk; and the cross transfer of debris, which starts a cycle that can ultimately lead to failure. Based on these observations, a qualitative model of the mechanism leading to typical head crashes is proposed. This model can be extended to many atypical head/disk interface failures as well.<>
