Modernization and Development of the Electrical Power System of the Isla de la Juventud

Today, science and technology play an important role in the advancement of culture, society, economy, and modern lifestyle. This paper aims to assess the need to modernize and develop the electrical energy system of the Isla de la Juventud, in response to reducing fossil fuel consumption, satisfying the growth in demand and in response to introducing 24% of renewable sources of energy for the year 2030. The study methods used are observation, documentary analysis, historical-logical analysis and synthesis, and graphic evidence. Interviews with dispatchers, operators and automation specialists were used as tools. The substation operating procedure is also considered. Consequently, it is observed that the main aspects of the strategic development plan of the electrical system of the Isla de la Juventud and the insufficiencies detected in the diagnosis of the Gerona substation point to the need to update this substation. It is proposed to carry out a modernization project for it as it requires an update of the automatic application advances of smart grids and new technologies, to increase electricity generation with renewable energy sources, reduce losses, shorten interruptions for users and ensure that the supply of energy is stable, reliable, efficient, and sustainable.
