Comparison of Two-Stage and Single-Stage Photovoltaic Inverter for Grid-Connected System

This conference paper extensively compares two-stage and single-stage photovoltaic (PV) systems for grid-connected systems. PV arrays can directly convert solar energy from DC to AC by using inverters as power conversion entities. As per the requirement, the DC voltage can be added by the number of PV panels. Also, for AC power there is a requirement that the inverter must meet domestic or commercial needs. Thus, the design of PV converters becomes very important. In the inverter design in a few cases, a simple boost converter or buck-boost converter is preferred in order to step up the voltage harnessed from the PV arrays. The next step is the role of inverters which convert the DC voltage to the desired AC voltage along with maintaining the power quality as per the grid standards. But, this methodology is very expensive and efficiency is also rendered to an extent as the component and magnetic circuit complexity is high. The Single-Stage Inverter (SSI) is a productive substitute for this two-stage inverter (TSI) methodology. The SSI performs DC boosting and DC to AC inversion using just one circuit. The benefit from SSBI's simplified and sturdy circuitry, as well as its dependability and efficiency. The differences based on factors like DC link, power loss, complexity, reliability, input voltage requirements, and control schemes for SSI and TSI topologies in PV systems are reviewed in this work.
