Performance Analysis of RIS-Aided Two-Way Communications Under Hardware Impairments and Rayleigh Fading

This paper investigates the impact of residual hardware impairments on the performance of two-way communication systems empowered by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Due to the existence of the direct link between the two communication devices, their bidirectional communication is accomplished in two time slots. Specifically, we deduce novel tight analytical expressions for the overall outage probability (OOP) and average bit error rate (ABER) using different settings for the levels of the residual hardware impairments under Rayleigh fading conditions. We also derive asymptotic expressions for the OOP and ABER in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime to unveil the system’s diversity order. The presented numerical and simulation results verify our derived analytical findings and demonstrate the impact of different system and channel parameters on the system’s OOP and ABER performance.
