Design and Implementation of MIL-STD-1553B Bus Remote Monitoring Through Ethernet on FPGA

MIL-STD-1553B bus is widely used as a primary bus in many avionics and military applications. Operational testing of avionics subsystems requires a data monitoring system for collecting the data to assess subsystem performance and isolate problems. The major subsystems include Mission Computer(MC)/On-Board Computer(OBC), Seeker, Telemetry, Inertial Navigation System(INS), Target update Receiver, Warhead, Two-Way data-link and GPS. MC has to acquire the data from these sub-systems to perform the required computation and the necessary operations. Each subsystem on a different bus requires a separate data monitoring system for data collection, a person must be trained and an implementation plan must be developed for accessing, storing, extracting, and analyzing the collected data. If a ruggedized, common data bus monitor and analysis system were developed, operational testing could be conducted in a more efficient and cost-effective manner. The paper explains the “Remote Monitoring” of 1553B operations on 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet on a Local Area Network(LAN) that provides real-time User Datagram Protocol(UDP) connectivity to four dual redundant 1553B buses operating in Monitoring Terminal(MT) mode. The main objective of this paper is to design a system that converts the MIL-STD-1553B data into Ethernet data using an ARTIX FPGA as the main device, without losing the benefits of both buses.
