Dy2(WO4)3 incorporated MoS2 as a hierarchically connected novel composite-based piezoelectric self-powered smart mask for human breath monitoring

The fast spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) has led to severe health issues worldwide, particularly affecting the respiratory system, which needs urgent solutions are required to address this emergency situation. With this goal in attention, we have designed a new piezoelectric self-powered smart mask for human respiratory monitoring based on a dysprosium tungstate with a molybdenum disulfide composite. The piezoelectric output voltages of the composite progressively improved from 10 to 30 wt%, and then decrease, with the highest output voltage of ~ 2.81 V attained for the 30 wt%. The generated voltages are used to charge the capacitors and real-time applications. Further, the sensor device was utilized for a self-powered smart mask for human respiratory monitoring and the obtained Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) results demonstrate that the sensor device can differentiate between fast and normal breaths by humans. By linking the smart mask to an external LED circuit system, the powering LED can be turned off when a person stops breathing. These capable results and the unique abilities of the sensor device, make it fit for breath system monitoring during the COVID-19 pandemic.
