Optimal Penetration Level of PV-DG in Modern Distribution Systems and Time series Approach

This paper presents an approach for optimal planning of distributed photovoltaic generation (PV-DG) in radial distribution power systems. The purpose of this paper is to introduce an approach that can be used to identify the optimal location for the distribution network to accommodate PV-DG systems. Additionally, an optimization algorithm is presented for determining the optimal size and penetration level of PV-DG based on minimizing power loss and time series power flow. A time series approach is developed to present hourly power flow, utilizing statistical data on power demand and solar resources. Also, Annual loss simulation analysis is presented for days with light loads. A co-simulation framework combines Matlab and Opendss is utilized to carry out a comprehensive analysis of distribution networks using quasi-static time-series simulation by interfacing the EMT simulation of PV-DG with phasor or domain simulation to the distribution network. This approach is then validated on an IEEE 12-bus radial distribution system and compared with other research studies.
