A review of different control methods of wind and PV systems

In recent times, the use of microgrids (MGs) incorporating a combination of Wind energy conversion system (WECS) and photovoltaic (PV) arrays along with energy storage (ES) devices is gaining momentum. Grid codes are implemented to ensure that these microgrids operate reliably and do not face power loss during faults or other disruptions. Fault ride-through (FRT) is one of the most crucial requirements among these codes. The main goal of FRT is to ensure the interface between the microgrid and power network remains intact during disruptions. The Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) is the preferred choice in WECS due to its numerous advantages over the Induction Generator. PMSGs offer greater efficiency, reliability, and power output, making them an excellent option for generating electricity from wind energy. In WECS to enhance FRT, modifications are made to the generator-side and grid-side converters utilizing conventional and advanced control technologies. Furthermore, external hardware devices like reactive power injection, ES, and protection devices are also employed to enhance FRT. This article aims to comprehensively overview FRT enhancements for PMSG based WT, PV, and hybrid MGs. The methods discussed in this article include both hardware and software approaches.
