Aquaculture Water Monitoring System Using LoRaWAN

Aquaculture practices in controlled environments bear significant reliance in order to meet the escalating global demand for fish products. It involves commercially raising fish and prawns in various settings such as freshwater tanks, paddy fields, artificial tanks, and reservoirs. This practice significantly contributes to the economy of several states in India, benefiting food supply, employment, nutrition, and revenue generation. In order to ensure the attainment of superior quality and optimal health of fish and prawns, The diligent assessment of the prevailing environmental parameters that exert influence on the growth of these aquatic organisms is of paramount importance. The proposed prototype presented in this paper utilizes LoRaWantechnology to send vital parameters to the aquaculturist stays at a defined range for the effective production. This low power LoRaWAN communication technology is preferred by many smart city solutions compared to the high power and limited range Wi-Fi, and high power cellular communication technology which requires a SIM card. The prototype incorporates a low-power ESP32 development board and the appropriate sensors to monitor temperature, pH, turbidity, chemical compositions (such as sodium hypochlorite, benzalkonium chloride, calcium carbide, Na-EDTA, and zeolite), and water level. The controller of prototype placed at the aquatic habitat continuously monitors these parameters using the respective sensors and transmits through the LoRa transceiver. These parameters are captured by the controller placed at the site of agriculturist through another LoRa transceiver. The aquaculturist, responsible for the pond monitoring, receives notifications, if any of the required parameters deviate from the desired values, enabling them to take necessary actions promptly.
