Design of Effective HCI Mechanism with Hand Gesture for Visually Impaired People: A Game-Based Approach

The importance of interactive games for specially-abled people (SAP) in the field of education and rehabilitation is increasing day by day. Many accessible devices are augmented with the games to make it effective for the SAP. Towards this direction gesture based assistive technology will play a vital role for SAP. In addition human-computer interaction (HCI) through gestures will play an essential role in the life of visually impaired people (VIP). In this context, a gesture-based game, Tic- Tac-Toe (TTT), is developed for VIP to enhance the usability of the system, it is controlled by the hand gesture using leap motion, it is chosen for its popularity and competitiveness. The experiment is conducted on six VIP to identify usability using effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction. Results advocate that hand gesture-based games have good effectiveness, efficiency, and a high system usability score (SUS) of 91. Which is evident that, gesture based interaction system is excellent for VIP. Moreover, this game can also be applicable to other differently enabled persons to enhance their active participation in the real world of computing.
