Bridging the Power Gap: Evaluating the Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness of PV-Based Smart Grid Integration as a Solution for Power Deficiency in Catanduanes Province, Philippines

The province of Catanduanes in the Philippines has been experiencing a persistent power deficiency, primarily attributed to non-operating power plants and a heavy reliance on hydropower within the existing power grid of FICELCO, prompting the need to investigate potential solutions for bridging the power gap. This research evaluates the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of $P V$-based smart grid integration as a solution for power deficiency in Catanduanes Province. A simulation of the smart grid system, incorporating PV systems with the existing power grid of First Catanduanes Electric Cooperative (FICELCO), was conducted. The efficiency of the smart grid system was assessed by analyzing the power generated and power consumed. A cost analysis was then performed to determine the cost-effectiveness of the proposed smart grid system. The results demonstrate that the integration of the smart grid system can significantly improve the efficiency of the power system. The cost-benefit analysis reveals that the benefits of the smart grid system outweigh the incurred costs, with a benefit-cost ratio of 2.28. Furthermore, the energy efficiency ratio (EER) of the proposed system is found to be 6% lower than the EER of the present system and 12% lower than the projected EER for the year 2029 of the present system. These findings indicate the potential of PV-based smart grid integration as an effective solution for addressing the power deficiency in Catanduanes Province, providing insights for decision-makers and stakeholders in the pursuit of an efficient power supply system.
