Towards Sustainable Urban Intersections: An Equitable Vehicle Emission-Based Traffic Signal Control System

The growing number of vehicles on roads has re-sulted in longer travel times, decreased mobility, and heightened environmental impact. In this paper, we present a framework for a traffic signal control system that utilizes vehicle emission measurements. The primary objective of this system is to effectively balance vehicle emissions across different approaches and ensure fairness for vehicles entering intersections. Initially, we determined the emission measurements for vehicles in each approach and subsequently selected the top priority approach. To further promote fairness, we introduced the concept of vehicle fairness and applied it to our traffic signal control system. Simulation results demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed methods.
