Information-Centric Caching Solutions for Vehicular Networks: A Survey

Context: One of the main challenges in resource-constrained networks such as vehicular networks is to enable vehicles to cache content. In vehicular network applications, data generation can lead to network congestion. The traditional method of identifying and searching for content on host-to-host networks using IP addresses is inefficient for handling content-oriented networks. Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is a content-centric approach that stores and retrieves content using names, making it easier to access. ICN also allows intermediate nodes to store content by using efficient caching techniques, this increases data availability in the network. Objective: The goal of this research is to examine previous studies on ICN caching in vehicular networks to identify research gaps that need further investigation and future research developments. Method: A systematic review was conducted to identify relevant literature, resulting in the selection of 30 primary relevant articles and 22 highly relevant studies. Result: The selected articles on vehicular networks utilizing ICN caching were organized and summarized, including information on their accuracy, evaluation type, and simulators used. The identified issues and challenges of ICN caching in vehicular networks that require further attention were also listed. Conclusion: ICN caching is a superior technique to resolve vehicular network content-oriented problems and enhance caching efficiency and content availability.
