An IoT-Based On-Cloud Accident Detection and Reverse Geocoding Equipped Reporting System

An accident is one of the significant problems that not only take life but also creates a disturbing environment on the road that can often lead to traffic jams resulting in retarded vehicular movement over the road. In this work, we develop a system that uses a power-efficient microcontroller pre-soldered with two sensors - an accelerometer and a gyroscope, along with two Android applications built using Flutter and a cloud-based Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS) to intercommunicate among themselves for accident detection and reporting instantly. Whether it is a disastrous rolling accident down the slope of a hilly road or simply a head-on accident on highways and expressways or even in reverse motion collision-based accident, it detects the accident over the BaaS and further reports the particulars of the accident like name of the victim, time of the accidemt, location of the accident and details of the vehicle to emergency contacts provided by the victim(s). The algorithm written in Typescript and running in a Nodejs environment on the cloud, can gather and decode data to find patterns to detect accidents. By experimenting with the microcontroller mounted over a miniaturized car and driven to different types of accidents, it came to our observation that our system can achieve accurate accident detection and instant reporting.
