User Equipment Power Consumption Analysis for Configurable Bandwidth Part (BWP) in a 5G Network

This paper presents an analysis of the 5G Bandwidth Part (BWP) feature, focusing on power consumption through throughput evaluation for a mobile user equipment (UE). From an advanced mobile communication laboratory, empirical measurements were carried out on multiple profiles with different numbers of antennae and BWP configurations. Based on the measurements, an increasing trend was noticed in the power consumption between the BWP with the fewest and with the most resource blocks. In general, from SISO to 4x4 MIMO, considering the same BWP, there is an increase of approximately 10% in the current drained from the battery, achieving four times the initial throughput. These results lead to a deeper understanding of how BWP allocation affects the performance and the power efficiency of devices in a 5G network and how providers can manage resource allocation in order to save power.
