A Survey on Security and Challenges in Software-Defined Networking

The fast-evolving trends in communication and information technology, such as cloud, mobile, and big data, are posing new challenges for the future of the Internet. For these challenges, ubiquity, longer bandwidth, and dynamic management are required. However, conventional methods that rely on manually configuring proprietary devices take a lot of time, are prone to mistakes, and are unable to effectively use physical network infrastructure. In the future, Software-defined networking (SDN) has arisen as a potential remedy for addressing these challenges. Two of SDN's distinguishing characteristics are programmability for network application development and decoupling of the control plane from the data plane. As a result, SDN offers increased efficiency, effectiveness, and adaptability to support contemporary network topologies. This paper provides an overview of the latest developments in the SDN research field and discusses some of its potential benefits.
