Design and Analysis of Inductive Power Transfer System for Electric Machine Excitation

As the development in electric vehicles, electrically excited synchronous machines (EESMs) have received increasing attention because of the low cost. With the advantages of convenience, reliability, and flexibility in power transmission, inductive power transfer (IPT) technologies have potential to realize brushless excitation of EESM. The coil and topology of system are designed considering the rotating and small air gap. The coupling characteristics of system are focused and described by dynamic model. To improve the reliability of system, the primary-side control strategies are proposed with Kalman filter estimation, while the reduced-order method is also applied to simplify the process of estimating. To verify the system and control strategy, a prototype is designed and constructed. The steady state error of proposed method is less than 7%, and the performance of IPT excited EESM is also verified. Moreover, the potential application of IPT-EESM system with position detection integrated is further discussed.
