Abstract:

DC-DC converters are extensively utilized in switch-mode regulated power supplies, renewable energy conversion systems, and electrical drives. Various controllers have already been employed for the regulation of its output voltage. However, these controllers provide poor tracking performance, increased steady-state errors (SSE), and reduced stability. In this work, the integration of a proportional integral (PI) controller with a type-II compensator is proposed to enhance the boost converter's performance. The average state space modeling technique is used for the boost converter. The compensator design and analysis are done using the k-factor approach. The PI controller minimizes SSEs, while the type-II compensator provides maximum phase boost to enhance transient response and stability. Combining the PI and type-II compensator in parallel increases the phase margin (PM), ensuring stable converter operation. The proposed compensator's performance has been thoroughly evaluated using the MATLAB/Simulink platform and laboratory experiments, encompassing load variation and comparing it against various controllers. This comprehensive testing affirms that the proposed compensator surpasses the performance of alternative controllers, demonstrating its effectiveness.
