A Switched-Capacitor Transformerless Inverter with Model Predictive Control for Grid-Tied PV Systems

Grid-connected photovoltaic inverters have become more common in the world of renewable energy systems because of their affordability, effectiveness, and small form. However, they encounter issues with leakage currents and decreased output voltage due to switching losses, which increase operating costs. So, using finite control set model predictive control strategy (FCS-MPC), this paper offers a novel single-phase five-level inverter topology. This topology is special since it only uses seven IGBT power switches as well as three switched capacitors to achieve double boosted five different output voltage levels. The five-level output also has the significant benefit of allowing the grid current to be efficiently filtered using a L filter with a minimal configuration. In addition, the observed grid current total harmonic distortion (THD) is also quite low. Model predictive control technique is used to control the grid current and improve the inverter's ability to integrate with the grid. With the help of this technology, the local grid's current injection is precisely controlled, allowing for the management of both the active and reactive power support modes. In order to verify the precise operation of the suggested configuration, simulation evaluations in the MATLAB/Simulink platform are provided in this paper, along with some results of experimental observations.
