RAFDD: Relay-Assisted Fast Data Dissemination in 5G-V2X Networks

Vehicular communication, with its potential applications in traffic safety, connectivity, and infotainment, is a subject of keen interest. The integration of vehicular networks with 5G technology led to the 5G-V2X network, which inherits 5G's advanced properties. However, these networks face challenges due to heavy data traffic that can strain network entities, causing increased request delays. To tackle this issue, we propose offloading data from traditional centralized network entities to the 5G-V2X network. We leverage 5G-D2D communication and introduce the Relay-Assisted Fast Data Dissemination (RAFDD) technique to efficiently select relays and offload data. In RAFDD, the Next Generation Node B (gNB) selects a relay, and chooses nearby vehicles within D2D coverage to form a cluster. The relay is then responsible for disseminating data to members of its cluster using 5G-D2D. This approach prioritizes relay selection based on channel quality and vehicle signal strength and is also computationally less expensive than other approaches.
