Real-Time Distant Healthcare Monitoring IoT System Secured by Light Weight Cryptography

The technical advancements in Mobile communication and the possibility of networking physical devices have made a great impact on the development of real-time monitoring and control applications across various fields. There is a rising demand for online monitoring of the health factors of a patient, who is staying at a remote location and elders suffering from health issues and not able to travel to the hospital. Safeguarding the privacy of the patient data is a paramount challenge while observing patient health conditions through IoT. We have introduced a Real-Time Distant Healthcare Monitoring IoT System (RTDHMIS) which protects the patient data using a lightweight block cipher BEST -1 (Better Encryption Security Technique-1). Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN) comprise many sensor nodes, which are implanted in the patient's body for data collection. Since wearable sensor nodes are resource-constrained devices, it is essential to use a lightweight cryptographic algorithm for data protection. The block cipher BEST -1 provides a good security mechanism against many known security attacks. The security and efficiency of the newly introduced system are compared with related systems and it is found that the performance of RTDHMIS is better for implementation in a healthcare environment.
