Optimal Location of Series Capacitor for Reducing Transmission Losses and Improving Economy of Power System

Increasing demand of electricity usage made power system engineers to think about increasing generation. But increasing generation comes at huge capital cost, as site required for erecting a power plant is huge. Also, conventional power plants must be situated far away from load centers, this poses stress on existing transmission networks Existing transmission network are old and have poor efficiency. Poor efficiency of transmission network leads to increased losses and reduced economy of the overall system. Transmission losses can be reduced by different methods, one of the simple methods is by reducing the impedance of the transmission line. Impedance of transmission line can be reduced by inserting series capacitor. This paper presents an approach to identify optimal location of series capacitor in a transmission line to reduce transmission losses and to improve overall economy of the power system. The proposed method is tested on IEEE 5-bus system.
