Multi-Layer Network Authentication Methods for IoT Devices

The Internet of Things (IoT) has experienced rapid growth, necessitating the implementation of robust authentication methods for secure and reliable communication within IoT networks. With new challenges introduced via IoT, such as limited computational power, rapid deployment, and non-standardized authentication methods, conventional approaches used for authenticating users or systems face significant challenges when applied in the context of the IoT. In the IoT domain, there are several unique authentication approaches that have been proposed in recent years, including QR code-based authentication, P2P blockchain authentication, and multi-layer authentication. In this study, we proposed a robust authentication method for IoT devices. This approach employs a two-layer strategy, combining MAC address and private key authentication to enhance security, while also presenting a time-based authentication approach with a verification process during each cycle to mitigate the risk of threats. In assessing the effectiveness of our proposed method, we analyzed multiple key metrics, including resistance to brute force attacks and the authentication success rate. Our findings indicate that the proposed method achieved an impressive authentication success rate of 99%, is highly resistant to brute force attacks, and is exceptionally secure.
