On the Performance of Epidemic DTN Routing on Low-Power and Lossy Networks

Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) are well-suited for environments with limited network coverage or high congestion, thanks to their ability to adapt to intermittent connectivity and delays. On the other hand, Low-power and Lossy Networks (LLNs) face limitations in computation, memory, and energy,. This paper explores the possibility of deploying DTN routing protocols over LLNs, scenarios such as healthcare, post-disaster management, and remote or rural areas. The present study explores the effectiveness of deploying Epidemic routing algorithm over LLNs. Our simulation results indicate that maintaining moderate Time-to-Live (TTL) values enables Epidemic routing to maintain high packet delivery and low packet loss rates even for large LLN sizes. This trend holds in the presence of mobile nodes.
