Uncertainty Evaluation of the Absolute RCS Measurement Method Based on Extrapolation Range

This paper study the uncertainty associated with the absolute radar cross section (RCS) measurement method using extrapolation range. This novel method enables the measurement of RCS without any prior knowledge of RCS-known objects, and is appropriate for traceability assessment. The configuration and the procedure to measure RCS with extrapolation range is expatiated. Based on the information, the uncertainty contributions and mathematic model are provided. An example of uncertainty when measuring a metal box at X band is presented. The uncertainty evaluation demonstrates that the expanded uncertainty can be as high as 0.42 dB, with major uncertainty contributions from measuring ambient noise, data truncation, and reflection measurements.
