Entry Merging Method for Load Reduction on SOME/IP Service Discovery

As in-vehicle systems become more complex, a rapid paradigm change is required. Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) demand a flexible system structure that continuously updates vehicle software. This trend has led to the emergence of a “Software-Defined Vehicle” (SDV). Among the key elements for implementing an SDV, middleware is essential for decoupling application and network topology. To this end, the “Scalable Service-oriented Middleware over Internet Protocol” (SOME/IP) has emerged as Ethernet-based middleware in-vehicle networks. SOME/IP standardized by AUTOSAR ensures free service communication between applications regardless of system structure and can provide a consumer-centered dynamic environment through service discovery. Despite these advantages, automotive OEMs hesitate to use SOME/IP across their entire vehicle because SOME/IP does not provide real-time solutions. It can adversely affect a time-sensitive system by generating significant traffic during the service discovery. In this study, to improve the traffic load problem, we propose a method for reducing the discovery traffic load by merging the service entries inserted into the queue for each cyclic period.
