Evolving Design and Worker Safety Standards for DC Power

Technologies are rapidly evolving for the generation, transmission, and storage of DC power, requiring new or revised design and worker safety standards. Examples of these rapidly evolving technologies include solar and wind power generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and de transmission lines. This paper will provide an overview of evolving design standards (UL, IEC, and IEEE) for solar power generation, batteries, and battery energy storage systems, and the recent and upcoming revisions for worker safety standards and safe work practices covering the hazards of de, capacitors, and RF electrical hazards (NFPA and IEEE). Details of evolving de shock and arc flash hazards will be provided, included new models for the modeling of dynamic arc behavior.
