Formal Modeling and Verification of IoT-based Smart Waste Management System using SPIN

The growing urban population is making it more difficult to manage the garbage system in various locations. With the growing amount of waste goods, outdated recycling bin methods are no longer an effective way to manage garbage. Therefore, managing waste material requires an Internet of Things (IoT)-based solution. Waste management systems powered by IoT are both expensive and extremely effective. For these systems to be more efficient and productive while also saving money and time, they must be correct. Taking into consideration the similarity factor, we employ the SPIN model checker to verify the accuracy of a suggested waste management system. Although a great deal of study has been done on the subject, no one has used SPIN to verify smart waste management solutions. In this study, we officially define the Internet of Things-based smart waste management system using the formal specification language, Process or Protocol Meta Language (PROMELA). We generate a program graph for this process with the SPIN Model Checker and explain safety and liveness qualities using linear temporal logic (LTL) in the form of a formula. Using the program graph and LTL formulae as input, the SPIN model checker conducts formal verification to ensure accuracy by determining property satisfaction.
