Control Strategy for an Active Switched Inductor Battery Charger with a High-Gain Output Voltage.

This paper presents the design of a control strategy for a DC battery charger using a high-gain boost converter. The topology of the power converter used for battery charging is composed of two inductances commuted by two power switches. In addition, the high-gain converter topology used for battery charging applications is able to achieve a high gain output voltage compared to the traditional boost converter. The proposed control scheme is designed based on the constant current and constant voltage charging profile; hence, the resulting control scheme is divided into two feedback control loops. A proportional-integral action provides an adequate current injection into a battery bank during the current constant stage. The constant current stage finishes when a voltage reference value is reached by the battery voltage. During the constant voltage stage, the controller maintains the battery voltage fixed in the reference value meanwhile, the battery current decreases. The constant voltage stage ends when a minimum battery current value is reached. The current and voltage reference values are provided by an external battery management system. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed control strategy applied to the battery energy storage system.
