Implementation and Analysis of a Double-Tiered Switched Capacitor Series Battery Equalizer Circuit

Energy storage systems have become attractive in different applications. However, when the batteries are connected in series, voltage imbalance in the charging and discharging process may occur. Due to manufacturing inconsistencies, temperature variations and differences in self-discharge rates. This affects the system's performance and service life, and may cause the risk of accidents. To solve this problem, active equalization methods, such as the active double-tiered switched capacitor topology is evaluated in this paper. The proposed topology is based on switched capacitor cell, which provides low complexity, reduced size, low cost and short equalization time. Thus, theoretical studies, simulations and experimental tests were carried out to validate in this paper.
