Design of an Error-Tolerant Nonvolatile Register for Energy-Aware Intermittent Computing

This paper presents a write-error-correctable nonvolatile register for energy-aware intermittent computing. By utilizing the write-error correction function and allowing a certain amount of error occurrence, it is possible to reduce the energy required to store intermediate data into nonvolatile memory. Through the performance evaluation using a 55-nm CMOS/MTJ-hybrid process technology, it is demonstrated that the proposed nonvolatile register can save up to 50% of energy consumption while increasing the active time of intermittent computing by about 140% in practical IoT applications compared to the use of conventional ones without the write-error correction function.
