Improving System Inertial Support from PMSG based Wind Turbines with Adaptive Inertial and Damping Control

With the escalating integration of power electronics-based renewable energy sources (RES) into the grid, the inertial response of the power system is decreasing. To address this critical issue and support the frequency stability, the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) based control is required for power electronics-based RES. Current approaches typically rely on constant inertia and damping or adaptive inertia but overlook the significant impact of adaptive damping. This paper presents an adaptive inertial and damping control strategy for PMSG wind turbines to support frequency stability by providing inertial response. Furthermore, various simulation case studies have been conducted in the Matlab/Simpower system platform to compare the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in comparison with other inertia emulation methods for PMSG wind turbines.
