Laser Driver and Receiver Amplifiers for 2.4 Gb/s Optical Transmission using WSi-Gate GaAs Mesfet's

A laser driver IC and receiver amplifier IC's for multi-gigabit optical digital transmission have been designed, fabricated and tested. WSi-gate self-aligned GaAs MESFET's with gate length range of 0.7 to 1.0 μm are implemented in the integrated circuits. It is demonstrated that the operating speed of laser driver IC is as high as 4 Gb/s with NRZ format and that both the bandwidths of preamplifier IC and gain-controllable amplifier IC are 2.4 GHz. These performances meet the fundamental requirements for 2.4 Gb/s optical transmission.
