An Optimized Calculating Method for the Vehicle Headlight Automatic Leveling System

The Vehicle headlight plays the key role to ensure the driving safety at night. Proper use of headlight can also improve the driving experience. The Automatic Leveling System (ALS) is an adaptive headlight adjusting technique which is used to maintain a stable lighting range for the vehicle low beam. By calculating the real-time suspension heights, the pitching angle of the vehicle body can be obtained, and a compensated illumination angle is output by the stepping motors in the headlights under the control of ALS. To reduce the complexity of the ALS algorithm, an optimized calculating method is proposed, which substitutes the complex suspension height calculation by a simple linear approximation. The pitching angle of vehicle can also be obtained by a simplified tangent calculation. The optimized method presented in this paper can effectively reduce the calculating burden of the ALS controller, and the cost of applying ALS technique can be reduced consequently.
