Investigate Influence of Slot-Pole Combination on the Voltage Total Harmonic Distortion of AFPM Generator with Concentrated Windings

Axial flux permanent magnetic (AFPM) generators are now widely utilized in conjunction with wind turbines due to their low-speed direct drive, high efficiency, high power density, and low noise. The quality of the electromotive force (EMF) generated is one of the most critical aspects of the generator. In this context, the EMF quality of a one-rotor and double-stator (AFIR) generator with concentrated winding is computed and investigated. It should be noted that the winding factor $\mathbf{k}_{\mathrm{w}}$ is one of the factors directly influencing the waveform and output EMF amplitude in the design of AFPM generators. As a result, the examination and assessment of the $\mathrm{k}_{\mathrm{w}}$ with a combination of various numbers of slots and poles play an important role in improving the harmonic components of the AFPM generator. Based on the application of the FFT series to examine harmonic components in the output electromotive force waveform, the voltage total harmonic distortion (THDe) is calculated. The results will demonstrate the influence of the slot-pole combination on the overall quality of the output electromotive force waveform.
