Optimal Sizing of a Hybrid Microgrid System in a Mediterranean Climate

The objectives of the microgrid optimization challenges are to maximize power while lowering costs. In this paper, Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources (HOMER) Pro software is used to design and analyze the performance of a grid-connected hybrid microgrid. The proposed system consists of solar PV panels, an electric grid, converter, loads and batteries. An economic feasibility study of the proposed system is conducted for two scenarios; grid-connected with batteries and grid-connected without batteries. Numerical results show the optimal sizing process of a grid-connected residential micro grid in Tipaza city, Algeria, while the grid-connected with batteries scenario has the lowest renewable fraction capacity, and the grid-connected system without batteries scenario has the lowest net present cost (NPC) and Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE).
