For whom can a robot be a partner

In Western societies, high individualistic values often lead to individuals relying on themselves for well-being, which can result in feelings of social isolation and loneliness. Social support, including emotional, instrumental, informational, and appraisal support, is crucial for mental and physical health and helps reduce stress and anxiety. Current paper investigates whether individuals with low social support are more likely to accept robots as companions. The study focused on young adults (23-35) and found that only 8.1% were willing to treat robots as companions. Weak correlations were observed between robot acceptance and certain social support factors. Those who accepted robots were more open to alternative solutions and sought informational support from formal and weak relationships. Family ties were shown to influence robot acceptance. Overall, the study highlights the complexity of social support, loneliness, and attitudes towards autonomous companions.
