Danube River Monitoring, Information and Advising System for Pollution Prevention and Control

The paper focuses on the development of an artificially intelligent information and communication technology and a sensor-based emergency risk management tool for pollution prevention and water quality control of the Danube River in the section of the river between Romania and Bulgaria. The article includes guidelines for risk management related to river pollution and water quality, which expands the scope of possible interventions beyond those currently considered. The expanded range of interventions includes tasks that are currently too difficult to engage human involvement, tasks where access may not be possible without information and communication technology and sensor support, tasks where such support would significantly increase speed, accuracy or the set of tasks/sensors, especially when sampling significant events of toxicity/radiation/pollution, man-made and natural disasters and other relevant hazard situations or combinations of hazards. As a secondary focus, the application of the proposed method among the municipalities along the Danube River will contribute to the sustainable use and protection of water resources in both Romania and Bulgaria, which on the other hand will support the protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems.
