Design of Low Profile Broadband Wearable Antenna for On Body WBAN Applications

This paper demonstrates a novel design of a low profile broadband antenna tailored for on-body Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) applications. The proposed antenna is designed on RT/duroid 5870 semi-flexible substrate. The design configuration consist of a rectangular patch, truncated triangular shape slots and partial ground plane is utilize, to achieve a compact novel shape antenna with enhance bandwidth of 2.2-5.2 GHz. The antenna has a footprint of
$\mathbf{45}\times \mathbf{30}\times \mathbf{0.787}\ \mathbf{mm}^{\mathbf{3}}$
, which provides a broadband capability. The estimated numerical free space realized gain of antenna is 2.3 dBi at 2.45 GHz and 4 dBi at 4.5 GHz. Meanwhile, the estimated simulated radiation efficiencies of antenna are 99% and 96% at 2.45 GHz and 4.5 GHz respectively. Moreover, the extensive numerical assessments, which included specific absorption rate evaluations and bending analyses, have proved the resilience of the recommended antenna design when subjected to human body stresses and structure deformations. As a consequence, the viability of the proposed design as a potential choice for applications requiring flexible and body-worn devices within the area of Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs).
