Aspects of Power System Stability with Converter-Based Renewable Energy Sources: An Overview

The use of converter-based renewable energy sources for electric power generation has been growing remarkably over the last few years. As a result, the stability of the electrical system has been impacted, with new problems and challenges arising from the use of devices based on power electronics. To minimize the impacts, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) have been widely integrated into wind and solar systems. In this context, this article provides an overview of the stability concept, the characteristics of electronic converters, converter models, and the main computational tools used in the stability study. Challenges related to the association of energy sources based on converters in electrical networks are indicated. In addition, case studies found in the literature that investigate the effects of applying BESS on the stability of electrical systems with wind and solar plants are presented.
