Field Applications of PV Solar Systems on Landfills

Landfills that contain municipal solid waste, industrial waste, and other types of wastes have been beneficially used for solar development. Utilizing the large space left after landfill closure saves natural lands. The solar farm developed at a landfill site generates revenue to offset landfill operation and maintenance costs, transforming the landfill into a renewable energy asset. The traditional solar solution for a landfill consists of a vegetative soil cover for landfill closure and a racking-supported PV solar system for power generation. Recently, an advanced solar solution has been implemented, which consists of an engineered turf landfill cover and a low-profile PV solar system. Field applications of PV solar systems on landfills are demonstrated through case studies.
