A Novel Cuckoo Search Algorithm for Enhancing DC Link Voltage in Micro grid System

A small scale power grid that has the capability to operate both in islanded and in grid connected mode is said to be a Microgrid (MG). These MGs are aided by Renewable Energy Sources (RES) namely Wind, Solar, tidal, etc. and the MGs acts as a backup power during increased power demand conditions. However, the fluctuating nature of RES necessitates power electronic converters. In the proposed MG system, a dc-dc Interleaved LUO converter is employed for enhancing the output of PV system and to keep up constant dc-link voltage at the output of the dc-dc converter, a Cuckoo Search Algorithm (CSA) based closed loop technique is employed. In consideration with the Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS), the energy attained from the wind turbine is supplied to a PWM rectifier, with the aid of a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). Then, the dc-link voltage obtained from the Solar and WECS is given to a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) and by achieving grid synchronization, it is fed to the grid. When excess energy is produced from the Solar system and WECS, it is stored in a Battery using a Bi-directional battery converter. The proposed work is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink, for evaluating its performance. The defined work provides better reactive power compensation, reduced THD, low switching losses and uninterruptible power supply.
