Simulation and Analysis of Link Failover Using Routing Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) Multi- Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) Networks

The reliability of internet service provider (ISP) networks is essential to ensure uninterrupted service. However, maintaining link availability or server network device redundancy can be challenging for ISP companies with high data communication networks. In this research, we analyze the performance of the Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network using Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) to back up the network at a commercial ISP. We use four routers for designing this system, including two PE routers as routes from two different ISPs and a router at the head office as a server gateway. Each router has a separate Autonomous System Number, and they communicate with each other using BGP routing. The novelty of our research is that we have implemented the backup system directly into the real-time network, and the downtime duration becomes smoother while maintaining 100% quality. From the simulation results of the failover system, we observe that the backup process runs smoothly and maintains network quality, which is evident from the measurement of throughput parameters of 1658 bps, delay of 244.6 ms, jitter of 0.23 ms, and 0% packet loss. Compared to using a single link connection, a failover system using BGP routing provides better results.
