An LDO Current Limit Protection Circuit With Hiccup Mode

This paper presents an LDO current-limiting protection circuit with hiccup logic circuit, which solves the problem of continuous short-circuit current in the traditional LDO current-limiting protection when the LDO is shorted. The proposed current limiting protection circuit can detect the output current and output voltage of LDO. And the current-limiting protection circuit will periodically detect whether the LDO is still in a short-circuit state. When the LDO is shorted, the current-limiting protection circuit will periodically cut off the LDO feedback loop, so that the output current only exists for a period of time. The simulation results show that the maximum output short-circuit current is 65mA, and the hiccup mode can save up to 85% of the short-circuit power consumption, which proves that the short-circuit hiccup mode has obvious effects and effectively prevents the chip from overheating. This current limiting protection circuit can be applied to various LDO current limiting protection circuits.
