Ray Tracing Model of LED Street Lighting for Energy Efficiency Simulation

Energy consumption is a critical aspect of street lighting systems, especially in the context of smart cities and the increasing adoption of LED lighting technology. Accurate models of lighting system photometrics are crucial for optimizing power usage and performance in street lighting design and analysis. One of the main photometric quantities for street lighting system is the luminous flux distribution on surface - illuminance. This paper proposes a simplified mathematical model of streetlight illuminance spatial distribution in points of interest based on the coordinates of the luminaire and its luminous intensity, formed in state-space representation and suitable for advanced model-based control. The model is simulated and validated by comparing to the illuminance values obtained from professional tools, all applied for the realistic case study of LED street lighting for a selected street in City of Sisak, Croatia. The obtained results prove almost perfect accuracy of the simplified model.
