Proposal of a Fog and Cloud Computing-Based Architecture for Air Quality Monitoring in Panama

Air pollution continues to be a problem that affects human health, safety, and the environment worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), outdoor air pollution is a significant problem affecting everyone in low-, middle-, and high-income countries, whereas indoor air pollution is just as dangerous as outdoor pollution. This study proposes the design of an air monitoring system based on fog and cloud architecture that allows the current state of air quality to be consulted in real time. The implementation of cloud computing allows these monitoring systems to acquire incalculable computational resources for the storage and processing of large amounts of data, whereas, with the help of fog computing, it is possible to improve the use of computing resources, storage, computing, and networks. In future work, we plan to carry out experiments using tools such as Apache Jmeter and BlazerMeter to test the performance of each microservice and obtain quantitative values that allow the measurement of the overall performance of the application.
