Addressing Power Supply by Complementary Hydro-Wind-Solar-Gas-Storage Multi-Energy System: The Wenshan Case Study

As one of Yunnan’s ethnic minority autonomous prefectures, Wenshan is in the southeast of Yunnan Province and has introduced massive electrolytic aluminum factories, resulting in continuously growing energy demand in the past five years. Moreover, it is foreseeable that the electricity growth in Wenshan will be at a high level during the 14th Five-Year-Plan period. However, the power supply of Wenshan highly depends on the main grid due to the lack of large stable resources. To support energy demand that bolsters social and economic development, and improve the electric self-sufficiency level of Wenshan, this paper analyzes the local energy demand and resources potential based on supply-demand balance, then proposes to further develop resources to build complementary hydro-wind-solar-gas-storage multi-energy system based on new energy potential in Wenshan, to improve the self-sufficiency level and reduce the main grid dependence. In addition to the proposed complementary wind-solar-hydro system in Malipo, Maguan and Funing counties, the wind-solar-storage system in Xichou, Yanshan and Guangnan counties, and the wind-solar-gas system in Wenshan City and Qiubei County, this paper also suggests to further strengthen the support of the main grid and therefore improve the power supply guarantee level according to the planning of high-voltage transmission projects.
